This recording was taken at the edge of the Siskiyou Wilderness Area. The recorder was left running in camp all night while my partner and I went for short walks on the trails and abandoned roads that snake through this area, returning to camp every forty-five minutes or so.
We had left camp about four minutes before the whistle was recorded. The knock came about 40 or 45 seconds after the whistle, but I edited out the silence to make the recording smaller. The battery that powered the microphone's preamp was running out of juice, which introduced a strange clicking noise on the recording, which was also digitally removed in this recording.
This area continues to be active, so the location will be kept confidential. Past activity in this area includes whoops, screams, tree breaks, and knocks.
